What is denture stomatitis and how to

prevent denture stomatitis?

Denture stomatitis is the inflammation of

the gum tissue that is covered by dentures

and is caused by the bacteria

Candida albicans (which is also responsible

for oral thrush). Candida is normally present

in the mouth but inadequate cleaning of

dentures as well as poor oral hygiene

contributes to their increased levels which

in turn causes denture stomatitis.

The fungi’s growth is also promoted

when patients do not take their dentures

off at night since this allows them to thrive

undisrupted in the area. The cleaning action

of the saliva on the palate is also prevented

when the dentures are worn most,

if not all the time.

Symptoms of denture stomatitis

In most cases, the only pronounced

symptoms will be redness and swelling.

When you take off your denture,

you should check if the area of your

palate has a reddish appearance shaped

like the contours of your denture.

In advanced cases, there can be pain

during the removal or placement of

dentures as well as presence of bad breath.

White lesions called “plaque” can also be

seen in scattered areas and is an obvious

sign of an on-going fungal infection.
