True/Misconception about orthodontics
▶ Do you think you are too old
to get braces?
As over 60% of orthodontic patient are
adults, an increasing number of
adults are getting braces regardless
of age. The oral status of patients is
used to determine whether they are
eligible to get braces. You have already
spent too much time considering
orthodontics, so now you can begin.
However, just one thing is that
the adolescent patients can correct
skeletal malocclusion through orthodontics
while still growing up.
▶ Does tooth extraction cause problem
while wearing braces?
Tooth extraction is sometimes inevitably
required for orthodontic treatment.
- In case of significantly a too big tooth
compared to the adjacent jawbone.
- In case of an inadequate space to
straighten crooked teeth.
- In order to improve protruded mouth.
These above cases require tooth removal
for a satisfactory result. Usually 2~4
premolars among total 8 molars are
extracted, thus the empty space by
removing teeth are filled with orthodontic
treatment, which enhances masticatory
function. Therefore, there is no worry about
bite force due to the removed teeth.
▶ Is orthodontic treatment over
immediately after the braces come off?
There is a most important stage once
orthodontic treatment is completed.
Teeth arrangement and beautiful smile
could be kept for a long time through
this stage. After orthodontic treatment,
the teeth tend to shift back to their
original position. Also, the teeth
keep moving while getting older,
therefore you should wear a retainer
to ensure that your teeth keep their ideal
position. We recommend wearing your
retainers all day for 10 months except
the time when you eat or brush.
After that, you can wear the retainers
only at night.
